How to read an encoder part number

Choosing the right encoder for your application starts with understanding its part number. At first glance, an encoder number can look like a random combination of letters and numbers, bit it actually contains useful information about the encoder's specification.

What does an encoder part number tell you?


Encoder manufacturers use different numbering systems, so there isn't one universal format. However, a typical part number may identify several key features, including:


  • Encoder series or model - identifies the product family and mechanical design.

  • Resolution - often shown as counts per revolution, indicating how many output signals the encoder produces per revolution.

  • Output type - such as incremental, absolute, analogue or digital.

  • Electrical supply - the voltage required to operate the encoder.

  • Output signal - for example, push-pull, line driver or open collector.

  • Shaft or mounting configuration - including shaft diameter, hollow or solid shaft, flange type and mounting options.

  • Connector and cable options - specifying how the encoder connects to your control system.

  • Environmental protection - an IP rating may indicate the encoder's resistance to dust and water.


Why is the part number important?


Even a small difference in a part number can mean a significant difference in specification. Two encoders may look almost identical but have different resolutions, outputs, shaft sizes or supply voltages.


When replacing an encoder, it is therefore important to record the complete part number, rather than relying only on the encoder's appearance or basic model number.
